The Perfect Pourover

"Makes way better coffee than a chemex, it's cheaper, cleans more easily (dishwasher safe), and I'm not afraid I'll accidentally shatter it. Oh, and it's inexpensive."

Why Brew with The V60?

Cone Shape: The Hario V60 coffee maker is known for its conical shape, which creates a thicker filtration layer of coffee for uniform and efficient extraction. The shape also allows water to flow towards the center, allowing it to stay in contact with the coffee grounds for the right amount of time, resulting in a cup with the optimal aroma and taste.

Spiral Ribs: Hario V60 coffee maker uses spiral-shaped ridges instead of diagonal straight ribs on the inner walls. The spiral ribs allow for the coffee to "bloom" and expand freely, creating a layer of air between the filter paper and the dripper. This design prevents the filter paper from sticking to the dripper and allows for efficient and uniform extraction. The twisted design also allows for faster water flow.

Maximum Brew Control Ability: The Hario V60's design gives the user a high level of control during the pour-over process, making it a favorite among serious coffee enthusiasts and experts. This allows for extensive customization and experimentation, but also has a steeper learning curve and requires practice and dedication to master. However, the end result is worth it. The user can adjust several factors such as grind size, water temperature, and pouring technique to achieve their desired cup of coffee.

Easy to use and maintain: The Hario V60 is a cost-effective choice for pour-over brewing, it's BPA-free, can be cleaned in a dishwasher, and is nearly indestructible.

Hario V60 Design

The Hario V60 cone-shaped pour-over brewer is designed for a precise, balanced extraction of coffee. The unique cone shape and large hole at the bottom allow for easy control of the water flow, resulting in a delicious and evenly brewed cup of coffee.

Hario V60 Filter Paper Questions

Are the Hario V60 white filters bleached?

The Hario V60 white filter papers are biodegradable and oxygen bleached (chemical-free).

Should you rinse your Hario V60 Papers?

It is recommended to rinse the Hario V60 filter papers with water before use, to prevent any paper taste from transferring during the brewing process.

Which Hario V60 paper impacts coffee taste the least?

A natural brown filter can negatively affect the taste of your coffee if not rinsed properly before brewing. These filters can add a woody or papery flavor to your coffee, which is not desirable. To check this, smell the filter after running hot water through it to see what flavors a natural filter may add to your coffee. On the other hand, oxygen-bleached white filters are more neutral in this regard, and whitening process does not add any unwanted taste to the coffee, Some people even argue that bleached filters do not need to be rinsed at all.

Are these the Hario V60 filters with the tab?

Yes, Hario no longer makes the filters without the tab.

What size filters does the Hario V60 02 use?

Using a number 2 Hario filter is recommended for the V60. Hario filters work the best and it is recommended to avoid supermarket filters as they may not fit well in the filter holder and can cause grounds to escape.

Does the Hario V60 come with filters?

No, filters will need to be purchased separately.

What is the max dose of coffee (in grams) for the Size 2?

Customers have reported as using upward of 50g in the Hario V60 02.

What size Hario V60 for a 16oz cup of coffee?

The Hario V60 02 can make up to roughly 20 ounces of coffee (this is highly dependent on your coffee recipe).

Where are Hario products manufactured?

Hario products are manufactured in Japan.

Hario V60 Recipes

Scott Rao’s V60 recipe

Scott Rao “strongly recommends”
the plastic V60, which maintains the heat of the brew and allows you to
manipulate the funnel during the brew without burning yourself.

Serving/Ratio: 22g for 360g / 1:16.4

Brew time: 3 mins

1. Rinse filter & pre-heat V60

2. Pour in grounds, flatten, and pre-wet with 66g water (~3x the weight of grounds).

3. Gently excavate to wet all the grounds within 10s

4. At 45s, start the main pour until 360g.

5. Gently stir to stop the grounds from clinging to the sides

6. At 1min 45sswirl V60 to flatten the coffee bed for an even brew.

7. Drawdown should be complete within 3 minutes.

James Hoffman’s V60 recipe

Like Rao, James Hoffman recommends the plastic V60, but personally uses the Hario Drip Decanter, a glass carafe with a plastic insert. Hoffman also emphasizes using a pouring kettle for maximum heat, using soft, pleasant-tasting water, and a high-quality burr grinder for consistent grounds.

Grind size: Medium fine

Ratio: 30g for 500g / 1:16.7

Brew time: 3min 30s

1. Rinse filter & pre-heat V60

2. Pour in grounds and create well in the middle.

3. Pre-wet with 60g water (~2x the weight of grounds).

4. Swirl the brewer until the slurry is even.

5. At 45s, complete the first main pour till 300g in the next 30s.

6. At 1min 15s, gently complete second main pour till 500g in the next 30s.

7. Stir gently clockwise and anticlockwise to kick grounds from the sides.

8. Gently swirl the brewer to flatten coffee bed for even extraction.

9. Aim to finish drawdown by 3min 30s.

Tetsu Kasuya’s 4:6 strategy

2016 World Brewers Cup champion Tetsu Kasuya has a unique way of brewing his pour overs – he even has his own Kasuya-branded V60 model.

While Rao and Hoffman have similar procedures, Kasuya uses a much coarser grind (similar to the French press), forgoes the bloom phase, and splits the pours into 5 batches.

According to him, the first 40% adjusts the balance between sweetness and acidity, while the next 60% controls the strength of the coffee.

Grind size: Coarse

Ratio: 20g for 300 / 1:15

Brew time: 3min 30s

1. Rinse filter & pre-heat V60

2. Pour in 20g of coarse-ground coffee.

3. Add 60g of water per pour times, waiting for 45s between each pour. This results in a total brew of 300g.

4. Control the balance of the coffee by modifying the 1st and 2nd pours. For a sweeter brew, make a smaller first pour (e.g., 50g). For more acidity, a larger one will do the trick.

5. Use either less or more water for the second pour to compensate for the difference (if any) in the first one.

6. The 3rd, 4th and 5th pours can be tweaked to 2 larger 90g pours for a weaker brew, or into smaller 45g pours for a stronger one.

7. To help you fully embrace his unique brewing technique, Tetsu Kasuya even offers a signature Hario V60 size 02 that has modified spiraled ridges to increase extraction.
